Located in the center of the state, the city of Indianapolis, IN, is not only an excellent destination for visitors from all over the country but also a great base to explore other urban and natural attractions in the region. If you are looking for spots to get away from the bustle of the state capital, these are some amazing day trips you can go on during the weekend or a holiday.
1. Cincinnati
The largest metropolitan area in the state of Ohio is one of the most vibrant economic and cultural hubs in the midwestern United States and an excellent day trip destination for Indianapolis residents. With a population of a little over two million, Cincinnati offers dozens of excellent tourist attractions, as well as a great gastronomic scene, famous landmark buildings, as well as numerous museums that attract visitors of all ages.
Downtown Cincinnati is located a little over 100 miles southeast of downtown Indianapolis, making it possible to reach it in less than two hours by car, driving along route I-74. Once you make your way to the Central Business District, some of the places you can check out on foot include the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, Smale Riverfront Park, Fountain Square, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and Washington Park.
2. Brown County State Park
Located less than 60 miles south of downtown Indianapolis, Brown County State Park overs an area of about 16,000 acres and is the largest state park in the state of Indiana, as well as the most visited one. Getting here from the Indianapolis city center takes about an hour by car, driving along route I-65. This state park opened its doors to the public in 1929 and is a great spot for numerous sports and outdoor activities.
If you are into birdwatching, mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding, or hiking, Brown County State Park is a destination you should definitely check out. This beautiful nature reserve is crisscrossed by an extensive network of multi-use trails, which altogether cover about 35 miles. During the winter months, this park is a perfect spot for cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and sledding. Those wanting to stay overnight can do so at the Abe Martin Lodge or the park’s fully equipped camping area.
3. Turkey Run State Park
Featuring steep canyons cut into the sandstone, as well as numerous hiking trails ranging in difficulty, Turkey Run State Park is another great day trip destination for Indianapolis locals looking for a break from the urban routine. This nature reserve is located about 65 miles northwest of the city center, making it possible to reach it in an hour and 15 minutes along routes I-74 and I-234. This park opened its doors in 1916 and welcomes about 700,000 visitors each year.
