Blank Canvas at Art MuseumPart of the Newfields campus, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the US. It features over 50,000 works, offering a diverse collection of exhibitions, classes, tours, and seasonal events. While exploring the exhibitions and grounds of Newfield – there’s a lot to discover, so let’s dive right into this inspiring world of art and culture.

Collections

Exhibitions come and go, but this museum retains an enormous permanent collection. From America to Africa, Asia, and everything in between, there should be something here to appease any artistic taste.

Asian Art

This museum contains one of the nation’s largest collections of Asian art. It includes a series of stunning Japanese paintings from the Edo period as well as a dazzling array of Chinese ceramics and bronzes.

Neo-Impressionism

The 19th-century Neo-Impressionism movement was a fascinating time in the artistic world, and the IMA has it on full display. It features works from Georges Seurat, Camille Pissarro, and, of course, Vincent Van Gough.

African and Oceanic Art

The majority of Harrison Eiteljorg’s African and Oceanic art collection can be found here. It includes models and figurines made by the Edo people and the Senufo people.

Contemporary Art

The museum is currently growing its contemporary section, which already features an impressive collection of light and video-based work, fashion art, and modern design.

The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park

On the west side of the Newfields campus, you’ll find the 100 acre Fairbanks park. Designed by the museum’s contemporary art curator, Lisa Friedman, the park consists of woodlands, wetlands, and meadows surrounding a tranquil 35-acre lake. As you explore, you’ll find site-specific art installations by Los Carpinteros, Alfredo Jaar, Type A (a New York City-based art duo), and more.

Lilly House and Gardens

Also known as Oldfields, the Lilly House is a 26-acre historic estate and house museum which resides nearby to the main museum. The house, which was originally built for Hugh Mckinnon Landon in 1913, was designated a US national landmark in 2003, is now a house museum.
Experience a slice of American history by exploring the rooms and halls, which have been restored to their early 20th-century appearance and feature the home’s original furnishings and decorative art objects.
