4 Reasons to Check Out the Indianapolis Zoo

Looking for a fun way to spend a day with the family? Come check out the Indianapolis Zoo, located right here in Indianapolis, IN. From savannah big cats to arctic penguins, there's an animal for everyone to love – just make sure none come home with you afterward! 4 Reasons to Check Out the Indianapolis Zoo 1. Total Adventure Package The Total Adventure Package (TAP) allows visitors to purchase special tickets for zoo rides and animal feeds. That's right: You get to feed some animals. You follow a specially designed path through flamingo, budgie, lorikeet, and giraffe enclosures; and the animals eat right out of your hand. While the flamingos are a seasonal adventure, the birds are housed in large aviaries year-round. TAP also allows visitors to experience the zoo's many rides. The Endangered Species Carousel is one of our favorites, featuring hand-carved animals such as seahorses, penguins, elephants, rhinos, and many more. While only open from mid-March through December, the carousel is wheelchair accessible. Other exciting attractions include the Race-A-Cheetah simulation, the shark touch pool, the tots treehouse & play area (wheelchair accessible), and seeing the zoo by train. 2. Baby Animals This Zoo is an important contributor to animal conservation efforts, which means there are always new babies to discover! Their newest addition is an Addra Gazelle named Cobb. Many zoos play an integral part in animal conservation through selective breeding programs, which allow the sustainability of a genetically diverse population. Don't just take our word for it, though. The zoo offers programs for all ages on their efforts – the cute babies are just a plus! 3. Rotating Activities The zoo offers numerous extracurricular activities like overnight adventures, scout troop experiences, field trip options, zoo camps, animal adventures, and dolphin-in-water adventures. If that isn't enough for you, there are also adult, family & youth programs. Luckily, your new 2022 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4x4 has plenty of space to bring the whole family so you can discover these incredible options. Have little ones? They offer the Jungle Juniors Preschool Program for ages 3-5. Saturday Science encourages kids ages 6-12 to ask questions about the science of the natural world, featuring different animals every week. Snakes, aardvarks, and kangaroos are only a few. For older kids, they offer a class all about zoo career options and can talk behind the scenes with the zoo staff. 4. More than just Critters in Indianapolis, IN Not only will you see animal enclosures here, but you'll also find the White River Gardens. At 3.3 acres, this beautiful area is home to multiple different (safe) species of animals, the Hilbert Conservatory, the DeHaan Tiergarten, and over 20,000 honeybees! During certain programs, the staff will lead you into the bees' hives and give you some incredible information on how we can all help protect our favorite buzzing pollinators. Zoos play an essential part in education, conservation, and community. Want to make sure you can bring home that extra-large stuffed tiger you got at the gift shop? Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana

How to Plan the Ultimate Visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Built in 1909, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is one of the oldest and most legendary sports venues in the world. Home to the Big Machine Vodka 400 and the Indy 500, the venue seats up to 257,000 fans, and up to 400,000 people with infield seating, making it the largest sports stadium on Earth. For racing fans, there's no better vacation than a visit to this iconic racetrack. If you're planning a trip to the speedway, this guide will help you create an itinerary that gives you the ultimate experience. Race Day The most exciting time to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is on race day. Throughout the year, the racetrack plays host to several high-profile, big-ticket events. Over the second weekend of September, the speedway hosts the Big Machine Vodka 400, formerly known as the Brickyard 400. This pivotal race matches the best drivers from the NASCAR circuit in a battle for vital NASCAR Cup Series points. While the Big Machine Vodka 400 is worth the trip, nothing beats the history, excitement, and speed of the Indianapolis 500. Started in 1911, this Indy Car race is the longest-running race in the country. Every Memorial Day weekend, it pits 33 racers in a 500-mile, 200-lap sprint around the track, often resulting in some of the best drama in professional sports. The pre-race ceremonies, post-race events, and the celebratory milk chug just add to the experience. Book your tickets in advance, as this race is the most popular event in the country. Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum You don't have to miss out on the speedway just because there isn't a race event scheduled. Instead of watching a race, take a trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. Many of the exhibits deal with the heroics and history of the Brickyard 400 and the Indy 500, including the winning cars, photos, and accounts of each race. In addition, the museum houses trophies, artifacts, and plaques honoring the greatest pro racers of all time. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to February and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from March through October. Admission is $10 for adults (age 16 years and older), $5 for youth (ages 6 to 15 years), and free for children 5 years and under. Red Bull Air Race Car racing is certainly rousing, but the Red Bull Air Race may rival it as the most exhilarating sport in the world. Each October, slightly crazy pilots from around the world test their skills on an aerial course designed to test even seasoned wingmen. Flying at speeds of over 250 mph, the race forces the pilots to do loop-de-loops, make their way through gates, and navigate the tightest turns to lift the trophy. For adrenaline junkies, there's probably no better sport out there. Whether you like watching a celebrated car race, learning about the history of the track and racing royalty, or seeing the latest extreme sport, the Indianapolis 500 has more than enough options to suit your tastes. If you plan on attending, just make sure to buy your tickets early or pick them up at the box office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Image via Pixabay

Festivals, fairs, and conventions — that's what! Here are four upcoming events you don't want to miss. National Bank of Indianapolis Summer Nights Film Series The National Bank of Indianapolis Summer Nights Film Series is an event to unite movie lovers everywhere. Held from July 26-29 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields amphitheater, guests will be rewarded with screenings of Oscar-nominated shorts the whole family can enjoy. Tickets are $12, though members save $4 on admission, and children ages 5 and under enter for free. Be sure to order your tickets in advance to secure a spot! Food and beverages can be purchased on site, and all films start around 9:30 p.m. However, to get first dibs on the best seats in the house, early birds are welcome to arrive when the doors open at 7 p.m. Gen Con 2018 Are you ready for the largest gaming convention in North America? Gen Con 2018 isn't just something for gamers, though; it appeals to kids and adults of all ages. Here you'll find food trucks and a beer garden as well as events like a film festival, costume contest, art show, and author and artist hangouts. Plus, 500 game companies will be in attendance, debuting of hundreds of new titles. You'll also spot tables and booths that are set up throughout, encouraging gamers to put their skills to the test with the latest board games, card games, and video games. If interested, Gen Con 2018 will be held at the Indiana Convention Center from Aug. 2–5. Indiana State Fair This circus-themed event will be held Aug. 3–19 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. You can expect plenty of amusement park rides and games, a diverse lineup of food trucks and stalls, and live entertainment. The latter includes acts such as country star Hunter Hayes, '90s sibling trio Hanson, and '80s heartthrob Rick Springfield. Bringing the whole family along? Tickets for the Indiana State Fair are just $8 in advance with children ages 5 and under enter for free. Or grab a four-ticket Family Pack for $30 and save a few bucks. Don't forget to snag your Midway wristbands either; they're available for a $10 discount until Aug. 5, give you access to all the rides at the fair, and are a must for the kiddos. First Friday Food Truck Festival This festival features 30 food trucks offering everything from Greek and Mediterranean dishes to tasty baked goods and a lineup that changes from month to month. Family games and prizes are aplenty, and on the Sam Ash Stage, entertainment is provided by music students. Performances range from crafty originals to impressive covers. All events at the First Friday Food Truck Festival will take place at the Old National Centre parking lot on Friday, Sept. 7 from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the gate, but children ages 5 and under (and leashed dogs) enter for free.
